Art has a way of revealing the unspoken, inviting us to reflect on what lies beneath the surface. On December 5, 葫芦影业 instructor and multidisciplinary artist Amy Modahl will present her latest body of work, Redactions, in a captivating talk and guided tour at the Kelowna Art Gallery.

This free, public event offers a unique opportunity to engage with Modahl鈥檚 creative process and explore how her art bridges the worlds of visual and written language. A collection of paintings on canvas and paper, Redactions delves into the interplay between semantic and asemantic expression, challenging viewers to interpret the space between sense and nonsense, structure and abstraction.

鈥淢y work stems from an interest in how language can function visually as well as textually,鈥 explains Modahl. 鈥淲ith Redactions, I wanted to explore the boundaries of understanding and self-expression, and how meaning emerges鈥攐r dissolves鈥攊n that in-between space.鈥

The evening will also feature Julia Prudhomme, whose poem 鈥渉ellhole鈥 is included in the Redactions exhibition catalogue. Together, Modahl and Prudhomme will take visitors on a thought-provoking journey through the exhibition, offering insights into the relationship between visual and written narratives.

Based in Salmon Arm, Modahl is a multidisciplinary artist celebrated for her work in painting, drawing, stop-motion animation, and performance. Her artistic achievements were recently recognized with the 2023 Tanabe Award for mid-career artists, which she shared with emerging artist Robin Hodgson. Over her career, Amy鈥檚 work has been exhibited widely across Canada and the U.S., with shows at the Kelowna Art Gallery, Vernon Public Art Gallery, and Soo Visual Art Center in Minneapolis, among others.

Amy has been teaching research writing, public speaking and theory courses in the Communications Department at 葫芦影业 since 2010.

This event is a must-attend for anyone curious about the intersections of art, language, and meaning. Don鈥檛 miss the chance to immerse yourself in the world of Redactions and hear directly from this talented artist and 葫芦影业 faculty member!
